Hi, my paternal grandfather was born in Vysne Cabiny in 1879. My paternal grandmother was born in Vyran in 1883. Both emigrated to America, I believe as children.

I'm looking for more information about them, their parents, etc. My elderly paternal uncle said he has visited both villages in the past. I am also curious what our family name was there--I know it was changed to Soley in America, my grandfather's headstone shows his surname as Solea, but I was also told it may have been Solej in the "old country." Thank you

The village of Vysne Cabiny is in Slovak Republic.

I think that Vyran is misspelled and should be Vydran and now part of town of Medzilaborce.

The village of Cabiny is listing SOLEJOVA (ova is a female ending). www.zoznamst.sk type a 0(zero) in area code.
The English Y makes the Slovak J sound so that is why Soley in US and Solej in Slovak, same pronounciation.
Check the LDS-Mormons website for church records which you can order and gather ancestral information.

I loved the pictures of Slovakia on the websites, and I even made goulash. I know airfare would be expensive, but is staying in Bratislava costly? I would love to plan a trip.

Why stay in Bratislava? It is far yet to Vysne Cabiny. Why not come closer to Kosice, Presov, Medzilaborce,or Humenne?

I agree, Bratislava is expensive, Kosice/eastern Slovakia/ is for 50% cheaper,

I have very little knowledge of that part of the world, but eastern Slovakia is where I'd like to see (really, I'd like to see it all). Is there a big city to fly in and out of in eastern Slovakia?

It would take me some time to be able to come. I am in graduate school and won't be finished until December, 2006. My son graduates from high school this year and wants a trip, though, I will ask him if he would like to see Slovakia, as it is his heritage, too.

Thank you both, your warm invitations give me reason to plan for a trip in the future!
